LP is related to J.....

100% jib ... LP equals J or 11.25 for all Catalina 27's. In the sail's triangle the luff is the base, the LP is the height. The LP and Luff determine the sail's size. The size is expressed by relating the J and the LP in the form of a percentage. The leech and foot dimensions, however, depend on the clew's height above deck. The height of the clew is controlled by the LP's position on the Luff. Whereas the luff and LP of a given size sail will remain constant. Its leech and foot lengths can vary but their sum total stays the same. What does this mean? It means sails of the same size can have very different shapes that offer different performance features. So determine where you want the clew, then draw it out on graph paper to come up with the foot and leech dimensions. Remember the boat's foretriangle is a right triangle with the luff as the hypoteneuse, the J and I are the legs. On the C27 standard the Luff(forestay) is 34.5. J (foredeck length) is 11.25 and I (mast, or jib hoist) is 34. Plot out various clew locations by moving the LP up and down the Luff and compare the foot and leech dimensions. Make sense?
