Just got a quote on a winter cover for my newly purchased 1986 Catalina 27. To be stored in southern Wisconsin. About $3000 for a mast up version. Anyone aware of a source for something more "reasonable", or perhaps even a "lightly used" cover?

Why mast up, put it down and acts like perfect lodge pole for boat tent of fabric or plastic.

If you store mast up you can make a ridge pole out of wood or PVC pipe and then use 2 tarps. A little snow that seeps in at the joint isn't going to do anything. Use a heavy duty tarp and NOT a cheap blue tarp. They always shred after the first wind storm.

when i got a $2000 quote for a 'mast up ' winter cover in 1995, i bought a sailrite sewing machine for $300 and $300 of 'boat top' water proof permeable fabric at $10 a yard, plus special thread and a grommet setter and grommets. it took me a week to sew a 2 - part cover. my cover had 2 sets of cloth strips that wrapped around the mast , sets of ties to tie the cloths together at the mast, and more ties to attach it to the bow and stern rails. 2 sets of wooden 2x4 s supported it tent-like . when we sold the boat 20 years later the cover was still in great shape. go to a tent maker / canvas maker. they can do this job for a lot less than $3 K. if you need design suggestions PM me.

Thanks Robert K. I'm using tarps this winter, but will consider your suggestion for the next.

Try Oshkosh Tent and Awning. They have Jean Paul Jonet - the sailmaker from Yacht Sailmakers on their staff. He has made sail covers and sails for a few sailors in my marina. http://www.otainc.com/index.php/services-mainmenu-39/boat-covers.html
