I previously owned a Catalina 25 with the travler mounted at the stern. I had had to mount the bimini far forward in order to not interfer with the sheet going to the boom. Later when I bought a Catalina 27, I purposely looked for a travler that mounted above the cabin and out of the way. However the problem I see now is that it is quite difficult to adjust the travler or main sheet (a matter of leverage). In a sudden storm I question the ability to quickly adjust the travler or sheet as was so easy with the Catalina 25. I suppose its a matter of convenience verses practicality. Any thoughts?

Traveler Adjustment

Bob We had the same on our C25. Now have a C34. The coach mounted traveler was a bear to move under load. So, we did some research, and found that Garhauer makes upgrades with more purchase. Just look in your Mainsheet magazine. If you're not an association member, check out Garhauer's website (www."guess what!!!???".com. It's a great improvement. Stu

Has never really been a problem

I worried about this too, but practice in the real world has shown me it's not a problem. When a storm hits, or winds pick up appreciably, I have never wanted to pull the traveler up to windward - just the opposite - you want to let it down some, depower the main. In this scenario, the increased wind pressure just helps. It would be harder to pull it back up to windward, but I'm unclear when you would want to (given the premise that a storm has suddenly hit).

Traveler and Main Sheet

Bob, I have a 1985 C27TR, when I bought the boat the original blocks for the main sheet were well worn and the line had been changed to a 7/16 which was slightly to large for the diameter of the blocks. All of this made the main sheet difficult to let out, even in a heavy gust of wind. I replaced the blocks with 30 series blocks from Garhauer Marine who makes all the tackle for the new Catalinas. I also replaced the main sheet with new 3/8 line. Both of these made a world of difference and I would highly suggest both. As for the traveler, just keep the car lubed as best as you can and you won't have any problems adjusting it. My girl friend can adjust the traveler to windward when we race, and at any time to leeward. Well, I hope this has helped. I have added Garhauer Marine's address below. Good sailing, Spanish Eyes C6049
