Catalina 27 tranny oil level?

A boater at the marina next to me has Cat27 from mid '80's. He needs to know the required level of the tranny fluid on the screw on bolt/dip stick. There doesn't seem to be any notchesoin the dip stick to indicate what the appropriate level is! Can anybody with similar craft revert with the correct tranny fluid level? Thanks, Jim McCue

If it has a Universal diesel and Hurth tranny...

it uses automatic transmission fluid (type AFT or Dexron II). The dip stick has a groove about 1/4 inch from the bottom. Drop the dip stick in the hole, don't screw it in, and pull out to check. Check out Torresen.com site for great information on Universal engines. Click on Universal, then M-18, then Hurth transmissions.
