I want to add a tiller pilot to my 1987 Catalina. Is the Simrad TP 10 adequate to the task? Other options are the Simrad TP 30 or the Raytheon ST2000. It seems the best mounting would be on the cockpit side rather than the seat itself. Is this true? It looks like the GPS input to the autopilot is more applicable for the power boat as opposed to the sail boat. In any case my main interest is to have a second hand while sailing. Any suggestions are welcome. Thanks.

Autopilot

I have the Raytheon on my Catalina 27 and am pleased with it's operation. I have the mount in the seat with the plug in the side. I have split cushions to allow for this function Neil

Raytheon autopilot

Neil, which Raytheon autopilot do you use? It is probably the ST1000 or ST2000. Does the ST1000 have enough force?

I have a TP 10

I have been using the Simrad TP 10 for about a year now and I really like it. It can help a lot but it can't do everything. Under power it tracks very well. Under sail in light to med. conditions is does fine. When the wind cranks up or, down wind you will have to hand sail. I found that it is best not to mess with the sea state settings. Does a nice job of tacking. The price is right and I think that you wil like it.
