My '84 Catalina 27 inboard Yanmar diesel has three switches to start. Turn ignition key to on. Press spring loaded glow plug button to heat glow plug for 20 seconds Pull spring-loaded plunger starter switch to start. For some reason when I tried to start this spring when I push the glow plug button the starter starts cranking immediately. I disconnected the plunger starter switch in case it was stuck and the engine would still crank when I push the glow plug button. Could the key ignition switch be bypassing the glow plug? Any suggestions?

What happens when you pull the starter switch? Does it activate the glow plugs? Could the wiring have been mistakenly reversed during another repair? I've got an 84 C27 with a Universal Diesel, and my set up is the same as you describe yours. I've never run into an issue--the push button switch operates the glow plugs and the pull switch operates the starter. I am at a loss as to how the push button could suddenly begin operating the starter. Randy
