Catalina C-27 Providence, RI
I currently own a 1973 Oday-23, but have been considering upgrading to a bigger boat that my wife and I can use for weekend getaways. We have an opportunity to buy a 1982 Catalina-27 that looks to be just what we've been looking for. The boat has an inboard diesel and lots of extras.

Does anyone have any advise as to what I should be checking out on the boat? Are there any problems that I should be looking for before I buy? Any advise that you can give me?

Thanks,
Bill

Catalina 27 Question

Bill, You can't go wrong with the Catalina 27. I sailed a 1985 C27 until Katrina took it and have spent the last three years looking for her replacement. I finally found a 1986 C27 in Mobile and should be bringing her home in about a week. Check out the owner reviews on the 27. They should tell you everything you want to know about problems (very few) and areas to check on the older boats.
Good luck and happy sailing.

Surveyor

I know its an older boat, but it is going to be a bgi expense. Get a marine surveyor. It will cost several hundred dollars but it will be worth every cent if something is really wrong with the boat.

Not only can he find problems with the boat, but many times he can give you hints on how to fix what they find wrong, and give you a ball park of what the repair may cost. This can help to guide you on what the final initial cost of the boat will be.
