Dear Reader- I have owned a Cat 27 (1977, standard rig, Hull #3307) for more than 10 years. We cruised for some years then recently began to campaign the boat in PHRF races in the Long Beach area. We've done rather well in the Wet Wednesdaays, and this year have two first places in the first and second series. Relatively new Ullman sails make a big difference in performance. I have an excellent crew and own them all the improvements I can afford. Just now I am planning to remove and refit the mast. I would like to clean and repaint it, internalize the halyards, add an second jib halyard, and route the halyards through modern sheet stoppers with winches on the mast. An expert mast person in this area, clearly honest, tells me that it will cost about $3000 to do what I want and th condition of the mast itself makes the plan of questionable value. He suggested that I get a new mast from Catalina Yachts, and have some custom modifications done on it. Is there anyone who has had experience with this problem willing to advise me on the best course of action? Thanks for suggestions in advance. Joe Casanova

Mast refurbish

Joseph; Do you plan to do the work yourself? A friend of mine has refinished two masts (he likes a black mast), and he said it is not hard to do. He used a two part epoxy paint. Rope clutches (I think this what you are talking about) run from about $50-$90 for singles, up to $250 for one that will handle 3 lines. New winches run about $110-$150 for single speed/non self tailing, new ULS halyards can run $100 or more each, plus any new sheaves needed. Grab a catalog, or go to a good marine store and browse the hardware to get ideas. Does this add up to $3000? Good luck. Michael
