I have a 1986 Catalina 27. I would like to remove the old holding tank which is under the v-berth and actually shapped in a "V" It seems to encased in plywood and am not sure if there is a way to remove it without cutting a larger access. Any one out there who has experience that they can share? Thanks

Catalina holding tank conversion

The P.O. on my Cat 27 removed the tank thru the access ports on the starboard side. He said it was a tough job sawing out the tank, but did not mention how much time it took. It was removed because the top was cracked and small amounts of liquid were coming up into the cushions thru the crack. After the tank was removed he laid in some 1 inch styrofoaam sheets on the inside of the hull and then installed a polyethylene bladder--apporox 12 gal. which is "V" shaped (possibly from West Marine). It works very well, only wish is that it had more capacity. Hope this helps

Try This

I owned a 1988 C27 and did replace the holding tank. Yes, it does appear the tank is "glassed" in but actually it is possible to remove without to much work at all. On my 1988 C27, under the V birth cushions there are wood access panels. Simply remove these wood panel. This will provide access to the tank. There is a piece of plywood in front of the tank that is held in place with a strip of fiberglass, looks like white tape, on the port and starboeard side of the tank running top to bottom. With a very sharp box knife cut the fiberglass strips from top to bottom. Now simply "push" the plywood piece forward from the top. The pylwood is also held in place at the bottom but it will push forward like it is hinged. Two people maybe required, it's tough!! Remove the tank......assuming plumbing has been removed first... If replacing the tank, postion the new tank (avail from Catalina) and attach the plywood back with a "L" bracket on both sided to place the fiberglass that once held the tank. Good Luck....
