I have provided you with a link to a Catalina 27 that has been modified to a Cutter. If hull displacement speed is 6.3 knots, what's the advantage (or is there a disadvantage) of modifying a C27 to a cutter?

Cutter
Cutter can have larger total sail area. Or, for an equivalent total sail area to sloop-rigged, the cutter's foresails can each have a smaller area than a corresponding sloop's single headsail, resulting in cutter headsails that are easier to handle; the force on each sheet is less than on a sloop's single headsail, and it is easier to conduct sail changes of a cutter's headsails as they are each smaller in area than one single sloop genoa.

A downside …..
…. I know of with cutter rigs set up like that, tangly type problems tacking or jibing that foresail. A similar set up on a boat here, the guy furls up the headsail and re-deploys it after the tack. I have seen others with a little more room between the headsails, and they don’t have that problem, as much. Another owner here has a detachable inner forestay for the stay sail. He says it pays big in stronger winds, with only the inner staysail deployed and the mail reefed, the center of effort is brought more into the middle of the boat making for a much more controllable and comfy ride. A guy here who has a really nice Gozzard designed Bayfield also has a Hoyte boom (self tacking no less) system on the inner staysail. He’s a bit hard to talk to, but he says he likes it. None of the above race. Anyhow, rs, how’s the healing going? No complications I hope … Later, eh! Ferg

Look at the freeboard on that "Ultimate C27" ... "I had to add 200 lbs. of lead under the hanging locker in order to correct a bit of stern weight added by the fuel, engine, and basement equipment. With the bow chain, that was all it took to float her flat.... " This guy has 200 feet of chain AND a windlass on a C27 and still had toi add 200 lbs of lead to get tit to float flat? He may well need that extra sail ...

Healing and response
Thanks for asking about my hip surgery. The surgery I had done is "experimental" and was more extensive than the new "resurfacing" hip that is slowly becoming popular in North America. If I would have had resurfacing, I'd be almost walking normal; however I'm walking with a heavy limp and sometimes if I'm tired I'll resort to using a cane. This will all disappear in about another 4 - 6 weeks (missing much of the boating season.... sob!) I'm going down to the boat on Monday (our July long weekend) and throwing more money at the black pit as I continue to improve it with the help from a buddy who will be doing all of the work; right now I'm only qualified to hand him the tools. Thanks for the replies regarding the "cutter" issue. I was thinking if you had furler on the headsail, you could hank on the storm big to the inner "thing-ma-bobber" in a bad blow (taking the furled sail on the headsail in). I sped read the link I provided, but on my own boat I'm adding 4 golf cart batteries in the "engine" area under the cockpit. I'm a bit worried what the additional weight, including the Merc 9.9 outboard will do to bow pitching so for me, having some extra weight in the bow may not be a bad thing for me either.
