A downside …..
…. I know of with cutter rigs set up like that, tangly type problems tacking or jibing that foresail. A similar set up on a boat here, the guy furls up the headsail and re-deploys it after the tack. I have seen others with a little more room between the headsails, and they don’t have that problem, as much. Another owner here has a detachable inner forestay for the stay sail. He says it pays big in stronger winds, with only the inner staysail deployed and the mail reefed, the center of effort is brought more into the middle of the boat making for a much more controllable and comfy ride. A guy here who has a really nice Gozzard designed Bayfield also has a Hoyte boom (self tacking no less) system on the inner staysail. He’s a bit hard to talk to, but he says he likes it.
