Catalina 27 - Cabin Locker Doors?

Hello Everyone,

I am working on getting my new to me 27 Catalina ready for the spring. I had a few cosmetic issues I wanted to tackle. My boat is a 1977 and doesn't seem to have had cabinet doors on the locker/small closet opposite the head. I attached a picture as well.

Has anyone put doors on these? I guess I could make my own, but it would be quick and easy to buy some if anyone knows a source(I didn't see them on Catalina Direct).

I would appreciate any advice/suggestions.

Thank you!

Jay

Since H&L Marine, the teak supplier to CY and many others went out of business last year or so, there was another source that someone mentioned here and on other boating forums. Perhaps someone will remember.

This is also a chance for you to use your Google skills. :)

Actually, Catalina Yachts in Largo will custom fabricate doors for you through their parts department, but they're quite expensive (probably in the neighborhood of $400-500). I got a quote from them when building some cabinets for my former C309 a couple of years ago, but ended up building my own for a lot less. You can buy the prefabricated parts to build your own louvered teak doors in any size you want from several sources - I bought my parts through Amazon. As Stu suggests, do a Google search.

Let me see what I find in salvage.

Thanks for the replies. I did some searching and I did find some louvered door kits that could work(I appreciate the suggestion). I just didn't know if this was a standard part/component I could order.

I really like the way this 27 Catalina did their locker doors(I attached a picture).

I was looking for an easy answer, but I will figure something out that looks nice.

Thanks again,

Jay

Jot down youer measurements and check marine salvage stores. I basically did such a thing when I picked up a parts boat to scour parts off of. I found a door to put on mine. It didn't fit exactly, but it was easy to make a shelf insert to go in next to the door. Check my pic. These shelf pockets will likely store some beach towels for swimming breaks and guests.

That's a great idea Phil and I like the way you did yours. I never thought to break it up like that, which would be more functional anyway. We have 2-3 decent marine salvage places around. Thanks for the suggestion!

Hi whaler. The doors you like look like original equipment found Cat 27s, at least in my year--1981. I have read in Ferenc Mate's books that the cute cutouts do not give adequate ventilation for drying wet gear and that the door panels are best replaced with woven cane screening. That should simplify making a pair of nice door frames and filling them with such screening....

Hi Jay-
This was a post on the Yahoo Cat 27 Group page last week:
I have started a remodel of my '83 27. I have removed the stove - sink - cooler assembly. I have also removed port bulkheads and hanging locker. The doors for the hanging locker are in good shape, the frame is partially rotted and not useful. The sink, stove, cooler tub and water tank are in fairly decent condition. I am not replacing them, but updating the inside for just day cruising. Its a lake boat only. If anybody is remodeling and these will help, they are available for free. I would only ask for shipping charges or you can come visit in Nashville and we can BBQ some ribs or something.
I can send pictures and will post them later if I get a chance.

The 2nd post has photos and includes one of the cabinet doors you want.... I guess they are also for sale.
