If you had to pick between the Mac 25 or the Catalina 22 for sailing on San Francisco Bay, which one would you pick.

Bias towards Catalina

Had a 1980 Catalina 22 that I sailed in Santa Ana wind conditions (15 kts. - 35 kts.) in So. Cal and always felt safe. Buddy had a MacGregor 26X and we would sail his boat in similar conditions with basically the same results. However, my preference is lead ballast over water ballast and the larger cockpit space in the Catalina. What year are the boats ?

I would take a Catalina over a MacGregor site unseen. The Catalina is actually a real sailboat.

25 Mac

The Mac 25 is not awater balist boat, it has a metal swing keel. The water balist came with the Mac 26. I had a Mac 22 with metal swing keel and now have a 26 with water balist. The 26 handles rough times better. Could be the diff between 22 and 26. Between the Cat 22 and Mac 25 I like the room in the 25 Mac.

What criterea do you use to define "a real sailboat"? I have sailed Ventures 21 & 25 for six years now and when I am out on the lake I move with the wind just like all the other boats, even with all the extra money I still have in my wallet!

Mac 25 very tender

A friend had a Mac 25 and it was a good lake boat. But even in a lake it was tender. We played one day seeing who could get the most water into the cockpit. He enjoyed the boat and kept it for several years. But IMHO it is not a boat for windy conditions. I had a Helsen 22 whick is very simular to a Catalina 22 and it handled high winds much better that the Mac 25. All that said if you have reef points to reduce the sail area you can sail in higher winds. We had a Mac 26 with the water ballast that handled high winds in the lake OK when double reefed. I think that the Mac 25 is a faster boat.

arrogant A$$

That has to be one of the most ignorant statements I have read in a long time. From what I have heard there is no doubt that the catalina is a better built boat. Yet, to imply that the MacGregor is not a sailboat is, of course, wrong and simply sheds light on the subjectively biased, insulting, ignorant, a$$inine attitude of Jhiggs. Would I take a MacGregegor blue water sailing...no, but there are those who do. For 7,000 $ I have SAILED six beautiful lakes, St. Petersburg, Fla., Charleston, SC and Choctawatchee bay (fla.)I have SAILED to beautiful anchorages, sipped sweet wine, cooked great meals, and made sweet love in many different waters. I have , perhaps gone too far in my descriptions...but my point is that the MacGregor has allowed me to enjoy many aspects of this great activity...as with most things in life, it's all about your attitude... so jhiggs, in my opinion, you can take yours and shove it.
