I just bought a 1975 Catalina 22. The mast needs repair at the base because one of the bolt holes pulled through. The mast step bent a bit also, but is not broken. Should I cut off the mast a bit, and drill new holes? Or should I have the break welded? (My preference) Thanks. Matt Abel

I would think you'll have a bit of a time getting the shrouds, forestay and backstay set up correctly if you cut the mast. I don't know if the turnbuckles would be able to take up the slack. I doubt it. Did you have a problem stepping the mast? What happened? Dave, 14447

mast repair

I just bought a boat with exactly the same problem. I too am interested in responses, but had thought about trying to JB weld a washer or such, since the mast is supported by standing rigging, I didn't know if that would be enough

mast repaired

I bought the boat with one mast bolt hole ripped out. This week, we took the boat to a welder buddy of a friend, and he did the repair for $30 It doesn't look perfect, but I think it will work fine. He also added a small reinforcing plate inside, so next time it will have to be the other side which rips out. I did not want to shorten the mast. This repair is better, and any decent welder should be able to do it. We were out of there in less than an hour. Thanks for all the help. Matt Abel #4460 as yet unnamed
