Catalina 22 Portland Texas
My wife and I are redoing a Catalina 22 (1977 model) The last thing we needed to do was replace the swing keel cable and winch. When we removed the rubber hose the previous owner didn't even have the keel ball in place. We have a part back ordered but there is no clue of when it will be in and we are dying to launch. Any suggestions on what we can do while we wait (other than daydream by sitting in the cockpit on the trailer?)

cable tube

I would be taking a serious look at the area where the cable was entering the hull, without the ball in place there is nothing to keep it from cutting into the hull. I believe your going to find some pretty severe wear in the hull there. While you wait you can make the repair, that is if there's the damage I think your going to find.

Thanks, I'll go back and take a harder look. As it looks right now when I was under the boat, I didn't see any wear under the boat and there wasn't any in the tube. I was surprised. However, I think the boat owner before me did more dock sailing than actual sailing from everything I have had to repair.

Cable Turning Ball

You say that the part is back ordered. Did you contact Catalina Direct? If not, I'd try them because they should be able to get you the part very quickly. If the hose was in place and there was no turning ball, then either it was never installed or the pin holding it in place fell out and the ball with it. I would not use it unless I were sure that the cable was not contacting or rubbing on the hull in any way.

Yes I ordered the part from Catalina Direct. I think they are super. However, This is the very last needed item we need before we launch and it is on backorder. I can't see where the hull has been contacted by the cable, but I'm going over it again tonight when I get home. Thanks for the imput. One more question, can you tell me what tension you tune to for your setup?

Response to David

Are you referring to the standing rigging? I haven't sailed this boat in two years; I gave it to my brother-in-law after I bought a new 350 in 2002, I had one of those tension gauges but never used it; I just tightened to the point where I could only move the stays and shrouds a little bit. This was a 1976 C-22 that I brought back to life and I was just glad to be out on the water in it.

Keel ball/tube replacement

Dave, When I got my '86 C22 5 years ago, the tube looked a little dry rotted. In the process of removing it, the brass pipe that is glassed into the hull came out. What I did was to clean out everything and epoxy the pipe back in lineiing up the pin hole for the turning ball. When that set up, I added more epoxy around the outside of the pipe overlapping the volcano of the hull. Its been fine ever since. This year , however, my keel cable broke. It was a hassle getting out of the water, but now she's in the back yard and I've removed the keel. Lucky for me there is no damage to the keel or the hull. The keel made a hell of a noise when it fell. I have the CD keel pads on and I think they slowed the keel down when it entered the trunk. I'll have to paint the bottom before launch next season so I'll wait till then to put it back together.

keel bolt inspection/replacement

I am concernd that the pivot bolt on the keel may be worn severly on an 84 boat I am looking to buy. Everything looks good elsewhere, so how do I inspect/replace? Any sites that might provide an insight before I buy? It will be on a trailer and as usual I do it my self if possible.

Cable Turning Ball

I would like to thank all contributors to this forum as it has been my only source of Info. Much has been posted on this item, but I still have a question & would appreciate any help. Back in 1991 when I bought my 19980 C22, I did a lot of work on the keel etc: sand blasted keel, new cable, oversized pivot pin pressed into the keel, grease fittings on the hanger bearings, aligned the winch, epoxy putty around the hanger bearings for lateral support, mast hinge, 4' traveler on the transom. At that time I was not aware of the turning ball (none present) but recognized the potential problem where the keel cable might wear on the hull or volcano. So in my infinite wisdom, I epoxied a bronze bushing into the steel volcano hose fitting. I have seen reference to a brass tube but I don't have one. This bushing has an inside diameter of 3/4" & is 2-1/2" long. My thinking was that this would be more forgiving on the cable & would protect the hull. It would be extremely difficult to remove. I checked this out today. The cable & bushing are like new. There is about 1/32" wear from the cable on the hull below the volcano. I am not too concerned about this but would like to know if the Catalina turning ball would fit into this 3/4" bushing. Does anyone have a picture or the size of this gizmo? Is it spherical, what material is it & could it be machined to fit into my bushing. What diameter is the ball pin? It would also be hard to drill the steel & bronze bushing for the pin hole. I have the ball part number but no picture. There is no hole there now so were some C22s made without the turning ball? One other thing. I installed the keel hanger bearings as they were when I removed them. Upside down!! Cause for concern? Thanks again, Bob B.
