Cable Turning Ball
I would like to thank all contributors to this forum as it has been my only source of Info. Much has been posted on this item, but I still have a question & would appreciate any help.Back in 1991 when I bought my 19980 C22, I did a lot of work on the keel etc: sand blasted keel, new cable, oversized pivot pin pressed into the keel, grease fittings on the hanger bearings, aligned the winch, epoxy putty around the hanger bearings for lateral support, mast hinge, 4' traveler on the transom. At that time I was not aware of the turning ball (none present) but recognized the potential problem where the keel cable might wear on the hull or volcano. So in my infinite wisdom, I epoxied a bronze bushing into the steel volcano hose fitting. I have seen reference to a brass tube but I don't have one. This bushing has an inside diameter of 3/4" & is 2-1/2" long. My thinking was that this would be more forgiving on the cable & would protect the hull. It would be extremely difficult to remove. I checked this out today. The cable & bushing are like new. There is about 1/32" wear from the cable on the hull below the volcano. I am not too concerned about this but would like to know if the Catalina turning ball would fit into this 3/4" bushing. Does anyone have a picture or the size of this gizmo? Is it spherical, what material is it & could it be machined to fit into my bushing. What diameter is the ball pin? It would also be hard to drill the steel & bronze bushing for the pin hole. I have the ball part number but no picture. There is no hole there now so were some C22s made without the turning ball? One other thing. I installed the keel hanger bearings as they were when I removed them. Upside down!! Cause for concern? Thanks again, Bob B.
