Looking for a used outboard and have run across a 9.9 hp one. Will be sailing in the ocean (not a lake) will the boat handle this? Thanks, Bob

motor

A 9.9 Hp will work very well. A long shaft model is preferable, especially in the ocean. However, a short shaft will work in calm waters.

Yes and No

I have a c22 on an inland lake. My long shaft 5hp is plenty to get me around. I also race and didn't want a huge motor hanging off the back of my boat. However, If you are fighting a strong current and tides along the coast, the larger motor maybe what you want. Paul

shaft length more important

Bob, have seen from 3.5 to 15 hp on the transom of C-22's, with alot of them around 5-6 hp. The 9.9 would let you push current and wind, but if it's rough and you are counting on it, get the 20 inch shaft for sure. I had a 7.5 Evinrude which was lots but with the short shaft it cavitated in rough stuff and we had to all sit in a pile port-aft to keep the prop in the water

I would recommend a 4 to 6

My 9.9 pushes my Catalina 27 to hull speed at half throttle. My 4 hp pushes my SJ21 to hull speed at three-quarters throttle. Keep in mind you have a sail boat not a motor boat, but raise the keel and a 9.9 might plain your 22.

9.9 HP

I had a Nissan 9.9 on my C22 wing keel. I worked out very well. There were a few occassions when I was thankful for the extra HP. I would highly recommend the long shaft.

9.9 is ok

I had 22 (#5069 1975)for over 20 years with a 1959 Evinrude 9.9 outboard. It worked great. I finally sold the boat when the engine died. It would cost me 2 or 3 K to replace with smaller engine. The 9.9 is exactly what you need.

Four stroke 5 hp

I use a mercury 5hp 4 stroke motor which works beautifully for my Catalina 22. I have no problem at half throttle.

9.9 Honda

I have to agree with most. The long shaft is the key. If you sail where I do, in and out of Ponce inlet, 9.9 is the best. I would also suggest a four stroke over the two. love the Honda.
