Cat 22 engine shaft ques?? ANSWERED, thanks.

Hi,
I have been looking for a Extra Long Shaft 25" Yamaha High Thrust engine for a Catalina 22.
I know it is a little overkill, but there is a reason.

My question is, would a 20" Yamaha High Thrust be OK?
This model is called the Long Shaft.

Now I have a 25" two stroke Sailmaster 6 HP (Johnson/Evinrude), on the boat, (pictured), which I just got and have not used. It is on a trailer.
so don't know if this length is really needed. I would be using it in the San Francisco Bay, where it gets pretty wild and wet, not lakes and rivers.

I just dont know if I would need the extra 5", and it is a really good deal on a nice like new engine.
Or, I can spend $700 more and get the same, like new but used, with the Extra long shaft, 25".

Might have to decide tomorrow, so any input or experience would be greatly appreciated

I would go with an extra long shaft. That 5" will help a lot in the chop- especially where you are sailing. If the Sailmaster works well or is repairable- I would stay with that - very lightweight and high thrust.

Don't know about the specific models, but in general the longer the better. As mick222 says, in any significant waves or chop, mine will start to cavitate and loose thrust. Can be disconcerting, esp. when coming into harbor (which is where it is most choppy, near the breakwater). Don't know the actual length of mine, although not a long shaft. Merc 4.5hp.

I ditto the extra long shaft as well. My southcoast 22 would cavitate (prop out of the water) with a boat wake, very loud and disconcerting along with the rocking of the boat. It would also come out of the water whenever i would go forward to hank on the jib, drop anchor, etc. It caused my to rush whatever I went forward for-especially when i had a newby at the helm. Do yourself a favor, have the sailmaster checked out, if not usable then buy another "extra" long shaft.

Go for the extra long 25 inch model

Why not keep the one you have though?

I do know about that specific model, as I had a C22 about 25 years ago. It had an Evinrude 6 long shaft (20"). It worked just fine in Hurricane Gulch in LA harbor. But I would ask the same question Rick Webb did, why not just keep what you have. No offense, I think C22's are great boats, but frankly a new 4 stroke extra long shaft OB of any brand could cost nearly as much as a C22 is worth.

A good point about the 25 inch shaft is that even if you don't put it LOWER into the water, the power head will be HIGHER out of the water- and waves.

Decision made, Ex. Long Shaft

Thank you all for input, have decided on the Extra Long Shaft.
The reason for the overkill, weight and cost has nothing to do with the Sailmaster,
which runs fine, but that I am going to use the boat as what I call a hybrid.

Meaning that the rig and sails stay at home, and that I use the boat as a motorboat.
Before you get bent out of shape, I have my stripes, every inch of land from Vancouver Island in Canada to Cabo in Mexico I have sailed passed in my boats.

All I want to do is putt putt around, go to Angel Island, spend max $10 a day on fuel, have a cabin, go from A to B and have friends aboard. AND, without the whine of a two stroke.

In fact, a swing keel sailboat is a great alternative to the huge and expensive engines and outdrives on some other powerboats I have had.

This 9.9 I have had on a 30' catamaran, and two different 31' trimarans..
