Catalina 22 companionway

I just bought a Cat 22, 1976 model that needs a bit of work here and there. The PO started to work on the swing keel and left the companionway open - no steps, just a board covering the center bilge. I haven't found the missing pieces and don't know what they are. I would like to build some teak steps to finish this area. Could someone who has the same model boat post a picture of what this area is supposed to look like? Or has anyone else done a similar imrovement?Cheers,Bill Ogilvie

hello bill, the companionway is just a simple plywood cover that fits in the molded ledge of that opening and the opening for the winch area is also a piece of plywood with a hole for the winch shaft, and is screwed to the top of the pass through.john

Simple Steps

Bill, most of the Catalina 22's have a "picnic cooler" at the base of the companionway. It simply sits on the cabin sole and is held in place by blocks attached to the surrounding cabin structures. Mine has a nice piece of teak and holly on top as a finished step. Of course the cooler is a substantial one that can handle the weight. Some of the older boats may have a different layout. Look on the National class web site. You can find pictures and sales brochures that may tell you what the origional looked like.
