I have a 77 Cat 22 which I sail on Lake Erie. As you can imagine, or know first hand, sometimes you just need a bigger boat. Lake Erie can kick up in a hurry and there are time I just can't sail but I can sail with people on larger boats.

I am going to look at a Cat 27. maybe, next week. What should I ask about and what should I look out for? I know the basics from my Cat 22. Is there anything specific to this model to look into in particular? Boat is a 1976

I have absolutely no negatives to say, and I also moved from a 22 to a 27. I would highly suggest an inboard diesel, once you have one you will never want to use an outboard again.

Inboard, diesel or gas: noisy, smelly, takes up too much room, too heavy, impossible to access for service.
Outboard: Much lighter, quieter, easy to service, safer fuel storage, gives valuable storage space.

Glad you mentioned that.... the older Cat 27's with inboards.. gas or diesel... were often neglected because of the poor access..

Also watch out for the chainplate connections & keel bolts on an old 76 model. They were using mild steel back then. Catalina did not switch to stainless steelkeel bolts until the end of 1978. After 35 years if they haven't been replaced yet they probably need to be. Look for any originally rigging & replace it. Closed body turnbuckles will be seized up - replace em too! & any worn standing & running rigging. It can & will fail on U at the worst time! Hopefully it doesn't have an ol 76 model Atomic 4 inboard - of so its likely junk by now. I don't think catalina even offered a diesel engine until around 79?
Inboards are great if they've been maintained & suck if they haven't. I agree with above: outboards are easy repower 4 a C 27 & a lot cheaper too!
