Stu !!!

I have had side rails/grab rails on my dodgers on my last 2 boats. When returning from up forward they are so handy. I always figured that if I went overboard, its working my around the dodger that will do it. I even recommend that people grab onto them when boarding also. Tony B

You can not move about on Bietzpadlin and not

have a hand hold within reach. Ropes, large cleats, stanchions, lifelines an inch in diameter, shrouds, boom gallows, all on deck, below you can move from point to point and never let loose of a hand hold. They are on the companionway hatch, the steps, on the cabin top, on all of the bulkheads.

In the fair winds of the BVI I did not think of heaving to. That is an interesting question. I was not faced with the problem of reefing, but with the sail area involved I would expect it to be quite the procedure.

catboats that I have seen have 3 and sometimes 4 sets of reef points.

Many cat rigged boats also carry a bowsprit and a small jib.

Cat Rigged

Cat Rigged boats are like automatics in some ways. For the pure joy of sailing and not having so many lines to contend with they are nice. They generally aren't as fast or point as well as the bermuda. Many of the larger cat boats do have standing rigging. The masts on cat boats are shorter than same size of bermuda rigs. Cat boats are subject to the dead mans jibe, since the boom is longer. In an accidental dead mans jibe the boom snaps around, the boat heels over putting the end of the boom in the water, hence you've lost all control and your'e (screwed)! I haven't done this yet but I seldom jibe my cat boat. I jibe it on ocasion with 1 reef in it. I have sailed both the bermuda and cat rigged boat, my opinion is if you want to point and have some speed along with good control, you probally want a bermuda rig or simular. If you want to spend less time rigging, and trailer as I do, you might want to consider a cat rigged boat, I sure enjoy mine! Cheers, Brian
