Packing Replacement

Can The stern tube diameter doesn't really help you, nor does the diameter of the shaft. What you need to know is the dimension of the packing material (i.e., 1/4 inch, 3/16 inch, 1/2 inch, etc.). This is because the flax fits inside the stuffing box, and gets wound around the shaft. The stern tube is aft of that packing gland and is the "hole in the boat" that the shaft goes through to the propellor. I'd call Catalina to find out if you can't find it in your manual on on the C310 website.

Packing Material Choices

Can You're welcome. You may also be aware of three options you have for the material for the packing: 1. regular or teflon packing - you need to let this drip a bit to get the lubrication from the water - the drips eventually get in the bilge 2. dripless - two materials here a. the green goop available at West Marine b. gore tex (maybe not the absolutely correct name) sold on the web at emarine.com Both work great by replacing the middle ring of flax in the box with a prelubricated material, so there is NO dripping. The gore is less expensive. All are easy to install and you CAN do it in the water, no need to pull the boat. Don't believe people who tell you you need to pull the boat. I've done it twice in the water. Try the link below and use the search engines on both the website and the message board (separate engines), search under stuffing box, packing gland or any variation of those words.
