Been there, done that
Those four screws are a real challenge to remove. Every couple of weekends or so I would spend an hour or two lubricating and trying to loosen them with vice grips, long-handled screw drivers and impact wrench. No luck after trying for over a year. I finally bought a dremmel tool and ground off the heads of the bolts so that I could lift off the compass housing. It is tempting, but dont destroy or damage that housing because a replacement is way over a hundred dollars. Those bolts you are struggling with are over 4 or 5 inches long and the threads dont start until you are at least 3 inches below the heads, so lube is not getting all the way down to the threads.Grind off the heads - it takes a special dremmel bit (about 10 bucks for the bit at Walmart). It takes a long time, its hard but eventually you'll be able to lift up the housing. Then you can easily grab the shaft of the bolts with vice-grips. When replacing the bolts put anti-sieze compound on the threads so they come out easy next time. Also, be very carefull removing the pins on the ends of the cables. If you drop anything it goes down the pedistal and then you're screwed.Rick HildahlAttitude AdjustmentC30 mkII #5630Ballena Isle
