After replacing transmission fluid I noticed the trans cable was getting hard to move, after taking off the compass I tried to remove the 4 machine screws to get to the cable controls and could not budge the screws even with a wrench on them, any ideas on how to loosen the screws and where does one get replacement cables for the trans and throttle? Thanks in advance Doug Hardie (Grape Escape Hull #5677)

Edson Steering

I take you have wheel steering, probably Edson? I just did this repair -- Edson was very helpful, call them. They have replacement cables and so do all the major suppliers (West, etc.) -- you have to take the old ones out and measure their length. A bit of a pain to do the replacement but well worth it. Been there, done that

Those four screws are a real challenge to remove. Every couple of weekends or so I would spend an hour or two lubricating and trying to loosen them with vice grips, long-handled screw drivers and impact wrench. No luck after trying for over a year. I finally bought a dremmel tool and ground off the heads of the bolts so that I could lift off the compass housing. It is tempting, but dont destroy or damage that housing because a replacement is way over a hundred dollars. Those bolts you are struggling with are over 4 or 5 inches long and the threads dont start until you are at least 3 inches below the heads, so lube is not getting all the way down to the threads. Grind off the heads - it takes a special dremmel bit (about 10 bucks for the bit at Walmart). It takes a long time, its hard but eventually you'll be able to lift up the housing. Then you can easily grab the shaft of the bolts with vice-grips. When replacing the bolts put anti-sieze compound on the threads so they come out easy next time. Also, be very carefull removing the pins on the ends of the cables. If you drop anything it goes down the pedistal and then you're screwed. those rotten cables

Doug,by contacting Edson products in Mass. I obtained written instructions and the cables(about $72.00 ea.) Edson's field support was excellent. I suggest that a short lenth of pvc pipe be installed in the bilge to prevent chafe which causes cable failure in the first place.Be patient with the installation and reinstall, this takes a bit of time. be sure to run a fish string through the binnacle whe you remove the existing cables. Good Luck
