CAT 30 Galley rebuild

I am in the middle of a full rebuild of my Atomic 4. While at it I found that the counter top with the sinks has some rot and decided to rebuild it as well. As with everything I do I can't just leave it the way it was. I am moving the faucet all the way against the cabinets and placing the sinks closer together.

Has anyone else made any modifications to their countertop? What does your plumbing under the sinks look like? pictures would be great.

I replaced my countertops during a refit. For starters I'll toss out a before and after pic. Maybe you'll find them useful. Undercounter plumbing was unremarkable, sink drains conjoined and plumbed to a single thru-hull adjacent to the waterlift muffler. One oddity with the plumbing compared to most other boats is the engine raw water discharge anti-siphon vented loop (note: not an anti-siphon valve) is in the galley cabinet with its vent hose routed to the sink drain plumbing.

This is what I started with... I really like the look your mirrors provide. Do you have the access on the aft counter top to the storage in the port locker?

That's much nicer than what I started with. No, no access beyond what you see. My refrigeration compressor is located back there, accessible through the cockpit seat hatch.

What hull # are you?

The mirrors are a great idea and nicely done.
Thank you Stu. Here is another picture taken at night with only the cabin lighting. It shows the color of the bronze mirror material much better.

I sourced the material on ebay, cut to size on my table saw. Simple and cheap.

I have the 1988 Mark II model which came with the white laminant tops, but the more I see the newer boats with corian counter tops the more I would love to have one as a new counter top on both sides of the galley. I would reduce the sinks to just one to add more useable space as well.

Has anyone upgraded to a corain counter top and if so, roughly what was the cost.

Thanks

Bob

i went back with plastic laminate but did get a quote on solid surface(corian) it was $ 550.00 labor plus materials and i didn't have that much in my budget so i used some plastic laminate that i had left over from a job .....i would loved to have had it but i didn't see me spring for a thousand dollar cutting board lol....but i do like the solid surface and may regret not doing it later on but only time will tell....

regards

woody

obtw you can use 40.00 to 55.00 a square ft for the budget and it will give you a good idea of how much it will cost....

Thanks Woody.

You have a point about an expensive "cutting board"!! It is a nice look though.

Bob, I agree about the corian, but I suggest that you carefully reconsider eliminating one of the two sinks. I am aware that this is a very subjective issue, but we use the two sinks when underway as wet & dry sinks and find the invaluable. The dry sink holds the coffee thermos, the hand lotion and other "things" that are up on the counter when at the dock or anchored. The wet sinks is used when underway for everything one would use a sink for. I couldn't imagine having only one.

Your boat, your choice.

Stu,

I am with you on that one, regarding the two sinks. We use one as well from holding water bottles to icing down drinks to just using it as a convenient storage area. But when considering an upgrade, I would opt for a larger single sink. When I think of changing to corian counters, the galley would not look good without the head nor the navigation table being changed, which equates to $$$$$$$$$$$$$$. Right now, I would be happier buying a new mainsail:dance:

Neil...
The smoke colored back splash on your counter looks fantastic. Can you provide information regarding material, size and how you installed it. You know, if you made these for the Catalina 30 galley, I might be the first in line to buy one!!

Beautiful job on the galley....

Thanks

Bob

Thank you Bob. First, you are spot on regarding change one counter = change them all, possibly the table too. Corian is plenty nice but good results can be achieved with plain old Home Depot variety Formica. Experience working with the material is a huge factor.

About that splash guard, it is ¼" tinted Plexiglass screwed in four places to the sink side of the galley searail. That face of the searail is canted back so the Plex had to be bent to compensate. There is also a short polished aluminum channel on the outboard galley cabinet face to support it vertically. It is not strong enough to serve as a handhold but plenty strong to shield sink splashes. Keeping the length only as far as the sinks eliminates the tendency to grab for it. Here are some better pictures. Ask away if I left anything out.

Again, thank you.

You won't find a cleaner galley, or indeed a cleaner restoration of a C 30 then Neil's!

Well now that Christmas is done time to get back to work. So far I have removed all counter tops and pulled the AC/DC fridge out. All of this has left me with rotten wood and shotty workmanship by PO's.

As you can see in the pictures the ice box was hacked into and then not properly sealed, all to allow room for the fridge. It will get repaired and wrapped and then surrounded with expanding foam.

Someone thought that spark PLUGS were more plugs than spark and used one to seal up a hose in the sink drain line.

So with all the counter tops removed I have started to cut the new counter tops using the old ones as templates. I noticed that there were small strips of wood (possibly teak) as edges for the ice box opening. Only problem was they were only the thickness of the plywood. I am going to extend these down to the full thickness of the plywood, fiberglass and ice box top. When I put them in I will use a silicon caulk of some sort to seal all three layers and hopefully keep them from rotting again.

Someone more knowledgeable about this than I am will no doubt comment, but silicone seems to NOT be the most appropriate material for that application.

Epoxy?....
