Fuel burn

My records show a fuel consumption of .4 gallon per hour with my 88 C30. However, i run at 2000 rpms which give a nice hull speed. I top out at 3200 which is the rated max for that engine. I wonder why you need 2500 rpms, maybe the prop is undersize? Good sailing Ron B

Fuel burn

Hi Jerry; I have a 96 C30 with the 25XP engine. I cruise at 2400 to 2600 at just over 6kts, depending on sea state. Over a 5 year period, we average .48 gph overall. We have a 3 blade 13X12 Michigan Wheel prop. Most "experts", and my engine manual recomend a cruising rpm for diesels of 80% of WOT. 80% of 3200 is 2560rpm. Fair winds Dave

Fuel burn & rpms

I know there is much opinion that a diesel must turn at a high rpm [80 percent of rated max], however there is another side to consider. The same small diesels also run generators, and are set to run continously at 1800 and rack up thousands of hours.I talked to Kubota and was told the rpm is not the important factor, but the load. A diesel needs to be run at enought load to maintain heat. As long as this is done, the rpm is of little consequence. Running a slightly oversized prop reduces the needed rpm to produce hull speed and results in less noise, vibration, and fuel burn.Running an undersized prop is like running your car in second gear. I have been running props on small diesels that allow about 70/80 percent of max rpms for years with excellent results. Just anoher opinion Ron B

RPM

Thanks Ron; I have not heard that reasoning before, but it makes sense to me. What size prop do you run on your C30? Fair winds Dave

13x9 1/2 Gori folding prop

I have the Gori folding two blade 13x9 1/2 and can only get about 5.2 knots at 2400 and no noticeable difference at 2600 rpms. It does however sail very well with the folding prop. Fuel usage is so minimal that I worry more about the fuel age.

FUEL CONSUMPTION/HR =?

Hi Ron, Thanks for input. But my real question is how many gal/hr do you burn with Universal__? Jerry

FUEL CONSUMPTION/HR UNIVERSAL MX25

Hi Dave, Can't tell you how much I appreciated your answer. 1/2 gal/hr is what one other person told me and you confirm it., Thanks, Jerry
