Tall Rig
The tall rig performs better in light air, but requires you to reef earlier in heavy air. It also points a little better. Tall rigs and standard rigs don't race as one-design, but in PHRF, in our area, the tall rig rates 6 seconds/mile faster than a standard rig. If your average sailing is with winds >15 knots, I'd take a standard rig. If the norm is <15, a tall rig. I sail in the California Delta (usually less than 15 knots), and I have a std. rig. Most of the boats around here use a tall rig, or even a "hotrodded" tall rig with even greater sail area. But I also sail on San Francisco Bay and the ocean a lot, so the std. rig was my choice. It's fine as long as I don't race against the "hotrodded" tall rigs.
