I have a question, I'm looking at a 77" Cat 27 I might buy. It's set up nice with a full set of crusing gear. It has a 98" Nissan 9.8 outboard mounted on a bracket. The selling owner said that the boat has a internal Petter diesel which I guess is a 1 cyclinder engine that had seized up and the prop was removed. My question is, who made the Petter, and if it's repairable, how good of an engine was it considered when it was in production? I know there are better engines out there and the outboard is fine. Should I get the Petter pulled for the storage space, or keep it as a backup? Thanks, Jim

Faster Without It

You'll sail faster without the Diesel. You'll be lighter and won't be dragging a prop through the water plus you'll free up a ton of storage.

Get rid of it!

If it's seized & they removed the prop, get rid of the hunk o' junk! Maybe a local engine shop would take it for parts - they might even come take it out for free if they can have it. I'd give it to them, use the space for storage & go fast! :) LaDonna

Cat 27 diesel

Thanks for the response. I guess now when I begin work on it I'll have to figure out the best way to remove it and seal up the area where the prop shaft is. I'll let everyone know how it goes. Jim
