Cat 22 halyards

Can someone tell me how the halyards are connected (the rope to the wire)? I want to replace the halyards, and need to know if I need a thimble or something else put into the line before I replace the old ones. Thanks!

Replace with all rope

Go all rope & forget about the wire. You'll probably have to change the sheave at the top of the mast but that shouldn't be too hard on a 22. LaDonna

Why all line?

What is the advantage of using all line? And if it's such an advantage, why did Catalina use the wire to begin with? Finally (pardon my ignorance here), what is a "sheave"?Thanks!

Explanation

Sheave is the pulley that the halyard runs on at the top of the mast.When your C-22 was made the only way to get the required balance of stretch, strength, and size was to use a wire/rope halyard. Since then ropes have been developed that have the desired characteristics. Sta-set X from New England ropse is one such rope. It will be a lot better with all rope. For one, you can turn it end-for-end as it wears. You can make these halyards yourself, but you must splice (eye splice) the shackle rather than simply tie it - a knot in this type of rope will reduce strength by as much as 50%. I've done the splices myself in Sta-set X, its not hard. jv

Going to all line

Jay,There are 2 reasons to go all line for halyards.1.) less weight aloft.2.) easier on the hands as wire can sometimes develop spurs from broken strands (commonly referred to as "meat hooks"...for good reason!).Catalina Direct has a conversion kit to go to all line. I used the kit on my '72 C22 and it was as simple as replacing the masthead sheaves and running the halyards (all part of the conversion kit). Of course, my mast was resting comfortably in a horizontal position on the boat...which was on the trailer at the time.Good luck,Brad.s/v Worthless Crew

Thanks, everyone, for your input. I have ordered a kit from Catalina Direct to replace the sheaves and halyards and get rid of the wires. Now I just have to find my Chapman's Piloting so I can remember how to do an eye splice . . .
