I just purchased a Beneteau First 235 .. Yahoo !! The keel is cast iron. There was rust coming though the bottom paint in spots, so i scraped off the paint. The keel is kanda rusty, but not badly pitted. I'll wire brush the keel down next. The question is; what primer/paint should I but on the keel before I repaint with bottom paint? Thanks for any help.

Check the Hunter Smaller Boats Forum archive

The 1986-90 H23 also has a cast iron wing keel. If memory serves me correctly, there have been posts in the Smaller Boats Forum that addressed treatment of rust, fairing, refinishing etc. These posts are archived by now, but you should be able to pull them up with very little trouble. BTW, I've seen a few First 235's over the years and I think they are good-looking boats. I understand they sail really well too. Congrats and good luck. Peter H23 "Raven"

I called them and they were very helpful on a similar problem. Took time to help. Have a number of small manuals that address specifically address the problem. Jim

Por 15

or something like that. My marina suggested it to me as a primer coat on the iron keel of my former boat. It's a small can, black and sticks like crazy. After scraping my keel down (most but not all of the rust) we primed it with the Por 15 then painted it. After two years in the water, it was 99% still covered. Good stuff. Warning: the can says do not get it on skin and they mean it. It will not come off, only wears/grows off over time.
