Dickering

We just bought a new Hunter 420 and met someone at Mystic Boat yard that said they got carpets cut to order at Home Depot. I don't know their names or how to contact them Home Depot didn't know what I was talking about. Does anyone have carpets in their boat and where did they get them?

Carpet Layer

I would think that most carpet layers would be capable and willing to fit your boat with the carpet of your choice. If I were going to do it, I would try and find someone close to our marina in order to minimize travel time. This should be interesting! Mike D

We have carpet.

Dickering & Dickering: We have carpet in our Hunter 31. I measured the extreme dimensions (longest & widest points). This determined the size of the carpet that we needed. Then I went to a carpet store and purchased a remnant that was a close as possible to the size I needed. I then layed it down inside the boat and started cutting (just like a carpet layer). Once I had it all cut and trimmed, I took it to a carpet store and had them bind the edges ($1-2.50 /ft). The binding was more than the carpet. It still looks good after many years and dogs. You can also make a paper pattern and then trace the paper pattern onto the back of the piece and cut it that way too. It really depends on how many cutouts you have.

Yes, at Home Depot

We have a two-piece cockpit carpet since we do a lot of mooring out in really dirty island conditions. We purchased indoor/outdoor at Home Depot, and had them make it up to a template we supplied. They hemmed the edges and did a nice job for reasonable bucks. The aft section is removeable seperately in case we want to leave the front in while sailing. Also makes it easier to store. Rick D.

Stone Mountain.

Just like Steve we fitted a remnant and then went back and had them bind the edges. Also a couple of small pieces for in front of the stove and in the q-berth. We even have a hole in the middle under the table so that we can check the bilge without pulling up the wall to wall carpet. Stone Mountain had more choices of the rubber-backed carpet. We did not want the hard, rough backing that you find on most home carpet.

I got a catalog in the mail that has it

Name of catalog is "Welcome Aboard...The Yachting Lifestyle Catalog." On page 8 there is a custom carpet kit. Apparently, they send you a kit for $7.95 to trace your carpet needs. You send it back to them and get a qoute from them. Price is $7.95 per square foot, cost of tracing kit credited upon order. Have not dealt with this company at all, this is not an endorsement. 1-800-295-2469

Buy a remnant

We replaced the 12 year old carpet this spring, watched for clearance sales, selected a nice 9 by 12' berber, cut the pieces ourselves, had the carpet store send the pieces to their binder, we paid $199.00 for everything, carpet and binding,( Hunter 34, all areas, including the head.)
