Careening a Hunter 31

I was so impressed by the responses to my question about deck leaks that I've decided to tap your wisdom again. When bottom cleaning time comes, I have a choice. I can take the boat about 80 kms to the club, pay $30 for a haul-out and work like mad to get it done in a day, or I can take it 1 km to the beach in front of my house, put it on its side as the tide goes out, clean and paint one side and then repeat next day. I've done two other boats there without problem, but I thought I'd get opinions from Hunter owners. Any problems putting a 31 on its side? Or would you suggest using sea legs? (which always worries me, although I've done that a couple of times as well.) Thanks in advance.

Depends On Environmental Laws

The answer will have to depend on local environmental laws. In the US if an atom of copper fell on the beach it would be considered a "spill"; however, in Canada it may be different, so that's something to consider. If you have similar environmental laws then the yacht club would be a better place to go because they're probably setup for capturing the dust. If you have sloughing paint or hard paint and there is no sanding then maybe the beach option is okay, as long as a drop of paint doesn't land on the beach and depending on laws and enforcement.

Thanks for the comments

First, the deck leak. I've posted to that thread. Thanks to those who responded to this thread: the environmental laws here are less stringent with regard to scraping: we can't use effective (toxic) bottom paints any more so it seems to be all right to flush scrapings and dust into the water. The rudder shouldn't be a problem: the last two boats I've laid over simply heeled further and further until they were on their side. One was a Ross 930 (6' fin keel) and the other a Thunderbird (4' fin keel). I don't think the Hunter 31 is heavy at the stern: I don't think the rudder would hit bottom. But the message is that I guess no-one has actually tried it.
