Took a while to discover that we are now a "Forum" rather than a message board.
We seem to have struck out last weekend. Anyone care to try again? Suggest 20 meters perhaps Sunday.

OK with me. What time are you thinking of? How about a hour earlier than last week, say 1500 pst?

Last week we tried 1700 GMT (0900 PST) on 17 meters. At that time of day 20, I think, was still reasonabley open. I was hearing west coast US, South Africa and some EU. Why not try 20 say 14.260 +/-. Might suggest if we have difficulty that we check into the Marine Mobile Net 14.300, raft up there then move off. Any suggestions?

Domenico,
Sooner or later the sun will cooperate. We, I suppose, just need to keep trying.

Thanks for setting up a dedicated forum.
Ran's suggestion sounds like the best possibility.
Unless someone has a better idea, let's try

14.260MHz at 1700z Sunday 18 January

I'm there

I'm there for another try. Took me a bit to figure out how to post but this seems to work better. Looks like 9 a.m. for me out on the west coast.

Thanks for setting up a dedicated forum.

Just picture a messy garage with a small table on one side, or picture the front seat of a Honda CRV. If you can do that, you have a picture of my ham shacks in you mind. Big smile.

And here's one of the setup on the boat. Needless to say, I only operate from the boat when my wife doesn't come to the boat with me. Otherwise, everything is kept in a vee berth locker and out of sight. You can't see it very well but I run an Icom 735 into an MFJ 949E tuner and my homebrew vertical on the boat. It was my "home" radio from 1992 when I was first licensed until last summer when I got the Icom 746Pro for the home qth.

Hey Lee, hard to think of anything as "frozen" as it has been in the 80's here.

Bob, I was looking at the 746Pro as a less expensive radio then the Pro3. How do you like it?

Karl, rub it in with the 80's! Here in Okie land we have been on a roller coaster ride setting record highs one week (75 a week ago) to near record lows just the other day around 10. However, nothing like Lee's frozen condition although we had those conditions just a year ago. I'll have to dig out some pics of a friend's antenna destroyed by ice a few years back and post them here. The weather has been really crazy (just like the lack of sunspots!)

As for the 746Pro, so far I have no complaints although I am aware of all the problems others seem to have experienced with it. I had considered the 756Pro3 and even had the money for it but opted for the 746 instead, saving around $1200 at the time. I guess you never know with any radio and just have to take your chances.

Good luck with whatever one you end up with.

Lee, great shot of your shack. You certainly have plenty of knobs to twist and tweak. I can't make out the device on the tripod. What is it? From the looks of the weather up your way, it may be a while before your beam gets unfrozen.

Hope to work you guys tomorrow.

Hi Brian, welcome to the group. You should be able to hear us. I might be too close though. And I'm working on setting something up at the house as well. Living in the center of Long Beach makes it tough to put up any tower, so it is looking like a vertical for me, probably a Hy-Gain. Until then, it is the ICOM 802 for me on the boat. Of course with the weather we have been having lately, not a bad option.

Still owe you that drink when you make it over to Two Harbors.

That's interesting. I took down my vertical because of poor performance. I want to replace it with the wire antenna. I went to Lowes and got 6x5' sections of PVC. Put them together but they are unstable. Still trying to figure a way to guy them without being too obtrusive to the back yard. But then again, a 30' pole in the backyard isn't easy to hide either. LOL

I might put the vertical back up just for the day and see what I can hear.
