Any thoughts on the Carbo 57 Ratchamatic compared to the Ronstan Orbit 55 Auto Ratchet with Dyneema link in a main sheet application?

Why do you need a ratchet block? The Carbo 57 is a much stronger block and less expensive.

BTW, wouldn't use the Ronstan orbit, since the dyneema link is more likely to fail than a stainless steel shackle is IMHO, and certainly more easily damaged.

At Defender the Orbit is considerable less than the Carbo and that’s what got me considering it, but it’s slightly smaller and I was also thinking that the Dyneema link could indeed be the weak link. I have used Carbo in other applications and they work well.
This year I was going to experiment with playing the sheet (cockpit center terminated) on our 190 sqft main and thought the ratchet feature on a 6:1 might make it easier and more successful. Maybe the ratchet is overdoing it with a 6:1 on this size sail? I do want it to be easy and efficient.

I preferr the Harken CLASSIC line of blocks

I love the windard sheeting car setup with a Stationary swivel base which allways allows mainsail triming from the same place no reaching for different travler positions

We had the 6:1 on a 35' boat and a 92 year old could handle it :) went to the 8:1 two speed BIG PITA way to much line

I have a 242 sq. ft main on a trimaran using a 6:1, and don't need a ratchet block... I see no reason you would need one with 20% less sail and a monohull that heels to ease the loads on the sail.

I'd also point out that ratchet blocks are bit more chafing on the line, as they have to run out with the block locked most of the time, unless you actively manage the ratchet feature. And in an emergency might interfere with blowing the sheet, which is a bit more important on a multihull than a monohull...but still.
