I have a 8hp Suzuki 2 stroke outboard that runs fine, but starts hard. I was considering spraying some automotive carb cleaner down it's throat. My question is has anyone had any trouble using the cleaner on a 2 stroke due to its oil removing properties? I have heard that WD40 works well too. Thanks in advance!

Dan, Our marina neighbors ran into the same thing with their two stroke. A local dealer recommended a product to clean the carb made by Mercury. It mixes with the gas/oil. I was going to do what you are advocating. The automobile brand carburetor cleaner that I bought strictly advised against the use of it on two stroke engines. I think I would be inclined to stick with something that is specifically made to do the job. I also feel that they put the same ingredient in a different bottle and call it 2 stroke carb cleaner. Of course, at three times the cost. Who really knows? good luck, Mike D

I strongly suggest using 2 plus 2 carb cleaner. Take the carb off and clean it out. Remove any thing that unbolts and spray the heck out using the small red plastic tube provided. wipe off and put back on and you will be amazed. I know your engine very well and that is the trick. I have done probably 6 in the last month and every time the engine starts quick. Crazy dave condon

Thanks for your advise. When I remove the carb will I need a kit, gaskets, or anything? Do I have to be concerned about any plastic parts being affected by the cleaner? Obviously I have no experience with this!

The only gasket is the one when you take the bowel off from the carb. I have found that 2 plus two does not hurt that. The reason for taking the carb apart is due to the fact there are small orifices or small holes which need to be clear of any gum or tar materials which can adversly affect the performance of the carburetor. I know yours very well and this is based on experience. Crazy Dave Condon

Gumming of Carb
2 strokes are more suseptable to gumming than 4 strokes because of the oil gas mix, expecially if gas stabilizer isn't used in the off season or the carb is run dry. You'll know if it's gumming of the main jet if you have to use excessive choke to start or even run. Carb cleaner works most of the time, but you may have to pull the main jet and use a tip cleaner. These are common where welding supplies are sold. Spraying in the carb throat almost never works because that is not where the jets are. Jeff Peltier
