Capsizing a Fixed keel?

Hi All;I have been an O’Day 25 owner for almost a month now and I’m curious if anyone has heard of a fixed keel 25 ever capsizing? I was asked by my wife and couldn't answer honestly. Thanks, Charlie Silvia

Capsizing

I've never heard of one capsizing, and in the right (wrong?) wind/weather conditions, ANY boat can be rolled.With that warning in mind, the O'Day 25 is pretty stable. I talked to one owner that had a knockdown in a heavy gust that put the spreader in the water. He said the boat rounded up into the wind, and popped right back up.Don't try to cross the ocean in one, but in th conditions the boat was built for (lake and coastal sailing), they're fine.

Mine is centerboard but . . .

A few times I have held course in long gusts to see just how far she might heel. I've had the rail in the water a couple of times and she always rounds up. Keep in mind I'm on a lake with no real waves to contend with. When my significant other is at the helm in a gust I just calmly repeat, let go of the stick thing. She, s/o, is a little short and when the boat heels she tends to climb higher towars the rail taking the tiller with her thus making things worse. I'm confident the boat will round up before anything bad happens. Just, i repeat, let go of the stick thing.I have her watch the incline meter. I tell her there is no way this boat goes over at less than 45 see watch that meter. It allows her to look at something other than the approaching surface of the water. Mostly I ease the sheets to keep it comfy for her. Some times peace is as easy as an eased sheet!Enjoy,Mike

capsize 1.9

the capsize ratio for your boat is 1.9, any number below 2.0 is considered 'safe for offshore'. having said that, you should not take that to mean you can go as you please, only that your boat is safer than many other boats in that size. care must still be taken.

Capsize Rating

Bruce - Where do you find the capsize ratings for various boats? I'm assuming the 1.9 is for the fixed keel O'Day 25, do you know the rating for a centerboard model? Just out of curiosity, I'm not going blue-water sailing any time soon.

both 1.9

both are the same, but would expect the board to be down for the 1.9 value. all the numbers for both boats are basically the same. there are 2 sites that have the numbers, addresses are a mile long. look for Sail Calculator Pro v 2.72, perhaps on google....don't know how to do links.
