Has anyone ever laid her over? Does the 23 have positive flotation in the event of a holing or capsize?

She fill up, she sink

If there was any flotation in the 23, it was very well hidden. I have worked on the keel bolts, I have sat in the bilge next to the batteries, and I have used every storage bin. No sign of flotation. And you are right to be cautious, especially if you have added a downwind sail. The boat has a fairly low downflooding angle, and I have had water over the rail quite often. This style of boat will fill quickly if broached.

yes you can sink a h23

believe me you can sink a hunter 23 how i know this will remain a secret but it can happen. When the conditions warrant it close and secure your companion way hatch and lockers. It is best to use a hasp with a secure pin or lock. There is no flotation in this boat.

Water

For the record, the Hunter 23 wing keel does not have flotation. One response indicates that the sailer was in heavy weather. His recommendation to have the hatch boards in place is a good one as the cockpit can fill up if broached or a following sea decides to swamp you. This could happen if you are carrying too much sail for the boat in bad weather. The cockpit drain is inadequate and this is one reason you now see open transoms to allow water to flow out of the cocckpit. This was aproblem with many older sailboats with the old style drains in the cockpit floor. Suggestion is to put drains in the transom like the catalin 22 for example.
