I am comparing the Capri 22 versus Hunter 22. I like the bigger cockpit of the Capri 22. I question the performance of water ballast in the Hunter. I am a day sailor with 3 small children, and dont anticipate spending more than one night onboard. I will be sailing in shallow lakes in Minnesota. I would appreciate your comments regarding my boat selection. What advantages or disadvantages do the boats have? Would you recommend for me to look at any other manufacturer?

Catalina 22'

Hi There, I guess if it were me and I was still living in Michigan which is just about next door to you, I would look at the Catalina 22' rather than the Capri. First with small childern you are going to find as I did, that the cabin area is where most of them will be spending their time playing while you are sailing, after the initial curiosity has worn off for them, and they become bored. Secondly, I feel the Capri is more race oriented then the Catalina 22. The latter more family friendly. I know there are plenty of good used 22's available back there, so now you have to decide what you would rather be doing . You can still race the Catalina if you wish, but I find the Cat 22 more nicely cruises with families. Now then if you want to get a slightly differnt angle on things, try looking at a Potter 19' or a Potter 15'. A world of difference in design and sailing charecteristics. The Potter a Very stable boat with positive flotation. They are manufactured here in California by Allied . Hope this helps Dave

Depends

What year Hunter 22? My 1981 H22 has 1,300 lbs of internal ballast, and a 40 lb drop keel. She's much more "sailable" in High winds than my 77 Cat 22 was. Capri interiors I found spartan, while the "older H and C 22's are quite nice. I am particularly fond of the Hunters teak and holly wood. Have fun...
