Capri 22 is still my first recommendation

I frequent the sailnet board and also the sailing anarchy board... and there are frequently newbies asking about first boats, and NEW boats. I still send most of them directly to the Capri 22. I wholeheartedly believe that for a BRAND NEW boat, when someone wants a trailerable, the Capri 22 is a great buy. Used, you can really NOT go wrong for a 22 footer, with the Capri 22.

They are decently fast, easy to rig, stupid easy to sail, enough room below to overnight on, and honestly easy to tow with most medium SUVs or bigger.

Back in 2008 my quote for a brand new Capri 22 with a trailer and a 6hp motor (race package, standard rig, wing keel), was $25000ish. Now I bet that number is higher, but still. We already had a thread for how LOW you can buy a used Capri 22.

Not sure about rental places near you folks, but I've seen a few rental fleets use them, it's a wonder there aren't more sold because of that... I recall my father taking one out years ago (1990s), and he still rants and raves about how well the boat sailed. Its what sent me to buy one in the first place.

Rentals;

When I was selling my Capri 22 # 297, one of the interested parties was a guy in Pennsylvania wanting to start a rental/sailing school.

The yacht club that eventually purchased # 297 had 3 which they rent out to members. Well they had 3, till one got dropped and mine was a replacement.

There is some place in the San Diego area which rents them. Saw a u-tube some place.

The Capri 22 and the Colgate 26 are both great boats to use for training. The Colgate 26 is far more expensive.

There's a place in Anacortes, WA that rents them too. And a club in Portland that has 3 or 4 for its members.

stupid easy to sail
Its the sole reason I bought mine. Price was already right and I was looking for a boat I could have rigged and ready by the time I hit the harbor entrance. Twenty minutes from car door to sailing the bay.

Simplicity at some of its finest.

You guys are gonna shoot me for saying this, but this S2 was pretty easy to derig and put on a trailer. Reminds me of the days I had my wing keel Capri.

2 shrouds, upper and lower only... so I removed the lowers... setup my A-frame, used my vang with a longer line in it, tensioned, removed the forestay, then lowered the mast.. easy peasy... I created my own mast upper, that has 2 settings, mast raise/lower, and travel height.

Here is the mast upper in the raise/lower position, A-frame already gone.

Boat on trailer, and home.. Before you ask, I intentionally left the mast upperr higher for my 2nd setting, so it was easier to work on the boat, and get under the mast. I have plenty of ceiling height so it'll just make it easier to get in and out of the boat while it's on the trailer.

I had (2) 30 minute conversations with fellow club members while I hauled out, and the whole process including loading onto a different trailer than came with the boat, still only took 2 1/2 hours. I think if I work at it, I could go from trailer to sailing in about 1.5 hours if I try hard enough, and that's solo.
