I own a 1998 Mac 26x and when I was replacing the mast I found 6 dead sparrows, head down, at the base of the mast, dead, of course. They had dropped down the opening at the top of the mast hoping to find a nesting spot as in a hole in a tree, and then could not escape.

You may wish to cap that opening.

35,000 times 6 is 210 thousand dead birds, who died a slow death.
