Greetings Sailors! I recently purchased an H34 and found this all packaged up under the V-birth. The boat has a 'blue' dodger and 'blue' canopy over the cockpit.

I'm guessing the U-shaped cutout would go around the mast....?

1. Where does this thing go?
2. Does it have a name?
3. What is the purpose of the horizontal seam down the middle with twist locks?

Thanks, Shannon

That'd be my guess too.

1. Forward or aft of the mast? Try fitting it both places.
2. Boom tent or foredeck shade cloth?
3. To extend the shade further or less is my other guess.

It looks like an awning for use at the dock or at anchor. You are probably correct that the cutout goes around the mast and the ties probably go to the life line. It is in 2 sections for a couple of reasons, to make it easier to handle and store and to allow for only half of it to be used. It goes over the boom.

The Bimini and dodger are great while sailing in the sun, the awning will make your boat much cooler. The gray color helps to block some of the sunlight but not make it too dark as a navy blue awning would.

It looks like some type of awning. Could not say what the horizontal seam is for, making it longer or shorter? The difference in color could be it came from a different boat or it was only offered in white. An awning can prevent direct sunlight from hitting the deck and thus cooler and allow for a hatch to remain open in light rain. I would guess it ties up to stanchions and lifelines.

OK, thanks. I guess that gives me enough motivation to throw it over the boom and see how to make it work ;) Shannon

Also, you might try it over the cockpit instead of the bimini.
It could give your evening libation in the cockpit that air of the Caribbean and floating sails giving a hint of shade while you lounge and tell stories of adventure....

It looks like the mast side has a rod pocket for a support pole? Are there rod pockets on any of the sides?

OK, that makes sense... I'll have to look a little closer for the rods and at these 'pockets' - Thanks!

Since you already have a dodger and bimini... it appears this was what the previous owner used before he had the dodger installed, and chose not to through it away.... Dodgers are expensive and maybe he planned to sell it separately when he got rid of the boat.

When the weather gets hot, like it does in Louisiana, an awning stretched out over the boom and amidships makes a huge difference in the temperature of the cabin and boat. Add a small awning over the foredeck and it can be quite pleasant in 90* weather, lots of air flow and lots of shade.

Gotcha - - I'll try out the "awning" after I find [or, purchase] some poles for it ;)

Also an awning over the bow can also work like a wind scoop, directing air down the forward hatch and into the cabin. I rig one most times I'm anchored out... but I simply use a few sail-ties and bungee cords with an over-sized beach towel.
