Does anyone have photos of their Cal 28-2 with bimini and/or dodger? I'm planning to have some canvas made, maybe as early as this winter, and am looking for ideas--things that work for this boat and things to avoid. For instance, I'd like to cover the helm station, which would necessitate enclosing the backstay. Thanks, Angus

description of original

Sorry I don't have photos, but my 1987 28-2 does have its original canvas which consisted of a reasonably small and unobtrusive dodger and a long matching rectangle which zipped to the back of the dodger forming a continuous bimini. A neat idea, really, but there was never any bimini frame with it, making me think it was intended to be hung from the boom and hence not a true bimini. The dodger frame was minimal, just a long tube to support the canvas and a system of some kind of elastic straps that pulled the frame back and attached at a round knob screwed into the coaming. When I go to get the dodger redone I'll probably add 2 support tubes to the sides and get rid of the elastic straps, which don't hold well in a blow. The sail cover was one of those annoying old-school types with hooks and laces. I'll go for just about any system other than that on the next one. Pedestal covers are pretty important for long-term preservation, but none came from the manufacturer that I know of.

Angus, I have a 1986 Cal also and sail on Fort Loudoun lake in Knoxville. I plan to go down river this fall maybe as far as Chattanooga before returning back to Knoxville. Would you please e-mail me at Berrya41@aol.com. George
