I live 2 blocks from Tampa Bay, the breeze was alot heavier than what I saw forecasted! With a "very novice crew", he must have given them a thrill! I'm jealous!! cup

Tim, we were lucky to be out there
and we were looking a north northeast sustained brezze of about 18 knots. On our way back to Apollo Beach we were pinching and doing 5.9 knots. As we approached the "Y" intersection of the shipping channels there were two freighters converging on our track one inbound and one outbound. The first reaction was to give way but we could not sail any higher and to steer down into a reach would bring us closer to the inbound freighter. After checking the ships progress against stationary object on the boat decided I had the speed and room to safely cross in between them. I put the hammer down down by dropping 10-15 degress increasing our speed to around 6.4 knots. The heeling angle went to 25-30 degrees which is a little excesive for this boat but had no desire to trim the sails for such a short jump. We were safely 200 yards away when the freighters converged behind us. Temperature was in the 80's with partly cloudy skies; had the front of the bimini rolled back and got a little sunburned. It does not get any better than this.

Sailing Florida's west coast.
The plan has been to bring Ladylove around after a leisurely tour of the Bahamas. We had to stop in North Carolina last October due to First Mate's health issues. We own the condo here in New Port Richey so I would love to have the boat on Tampa Bay or even up here. My favorite spot is the Davis Island YC but they have a fifty year waiting list for slips. Literally! So if things work out I will sail a few days each month driving from Ohio to NC until hurricane season passes. Then I hope to find crew to head south. Because it is difficult to find long term crew I will probably just go down to the Keys and then up here. I did find a slip near here if I can't find a place on the bay. But you know what they say about plans.

my last email disappeared without a trace, so I'll shorten it- Benny, the weather was great, and how big did those freighters look from 2oo yards?!? I'm scared to get within a quarter mile. Those tight sqeezes are the times we remember the longest! Ed, glad you enjoyed the bay. I enjoy sailing with more than one boat- even if neither of us admit to racing! Also, the Harborage is just south of the Municipal Marina for St. Pete, where my slip is. We just built a new dock and have openings, although that dock can't have live-aboard, and I think the slip sizes are for mid to large boats. However, effective 10-1-08, slips are no longer tranferrable with the sale of the boat, so openings are soon gonna be available

That's good news Tim. Ladylove and I could be quite happy in St. Pete. It's kind of a long drive from NPR, especially during rush hour. But in Ohio I was ninety miles from the boat, twice as far. I was thinking about how few boats were out on such a gorgeous day. But if I am honest about Lake Erie it really isn't much different. Maybe sailors are alike everywhere. At home I have friends who don't sail just to sail. If they are cruisers they wait for a long weekend because they want to anchor and cook and drink. If they are racers they wait for the next event. I have only had my own sailboat for ten years. And that after many years of powerboats, both skiing and racing. Maybe that is why I still go out every chance I get.

I am planning to leave NY late Oct and head south also for west coast, mostly off shore weather permitting,wife not doing trip and not into longer ICW trip,someone suggested I do a tour of the bahamas also. Around the keys and up west coast to Charlotte Harbor. I was planning to be in NY end of this month but our home here is keeping us here longer with some alterations taking longer, I will be adding a Flex o Fold before she go's in. Nick

Your name sounds familar to me. I used to crew for my Dad's inboard hydroplane in the 70's and 80's. APBA class A 150 cubic inch. His name was Dick Snider. We ran in Madison In., Dayton Ohio,Kankakee Il., Miami and St.Pete Fl and others. Did you know him?

Maybe it was your grandfather Lance. I do remember a Dick Snider from APBA days but I raced in the late 50's. I ran outboards in class C, a Speedliner runabout and a Swift hydro. Hard days towing a double-decker trailer with a 4-cylinder Jeep across four or five states. Still I don't regret all the time on the water. I grew up on the Allegheny river which is why I was late to sailing. I dumped my canoe more than once trying.

or possibly a race program. Just sounds familar. If my dad were alive he would be 78. I am glad you made it through those hairy race boats to find sailing! We also used to attend some outboard races with a neighbor Dick Lovelace. A big guy but very competitive in small boats. Take care, Lance
