Dear Peggy, My friend (it's reall not me) is very frustrated with his macerator. He has a 2004 hunter 36 and can't figure out how to get to it for service or replacement. He was able to just barely turn the screw to check for a clog but it still won't run. I told him if anyone can get the answer on the best way to solve this it was you. Is ther a way to reach the macerator to service or replace it? Ger

Did he even think...

about calling the factory? I've always found them very helpful.

Question:

You say the macerator won't run...does that mean the motor isn't running at all? Or simply that the motor runs, but it's not pulling anything out of the tank?

If the motor doesn't run, it's not getting any power...which means the problem isn't in the macerator itself, but in the wiring--a blown fuse... a disconnected wire...corroded connection...or may something as simple as the breaker isn't on.

If the motor runs, but the macerator doesn't move anything through it, it prob'ly needs a new impeller. But as for how to access it to remove it to replace the impeller, your friend needs to ask Hunter...'cuz they installed it.

Once he's able to get to it to remove it he needs to relocate it to more accessible location...'cuz whether or not his current problem is wiring or something wrong the macerator itself or not, sooner or later he will need access to it to service.

hunter 36 macerator

You can access it from the aft cabin rear wall to starboard. There are two latches then lift the panel up and then angle it out and down. Be sure to pump and flush multiple times before to attempt to take it out, if you are going to remove it. To remove it I used a blowdryer to soften the hose a bit and had someone hold the hose from the stern locker as I worked it from the panel I described in the aft cabin. Never fun to mess with a macerator, good luck. Mike

on the other hand, ...

... it could be that the motor doesn't work - worn or corroded commutator, broken brush wire, frozen bearings, etc. I've seen many motors that won't turn with power applied.

Frozen Macerator Pump

The pump on my H310 was bad when I puchased the boat in 2004. Hunter installed it with impeller up contrary to installation instructions. Had to move and reconfigure hose runs to correct.

What Mike Said

I have a Hunter 2007-36 and you excess the macerator just
what mike said.
Breaker on ac panel needs to be on and push switch the toggle
switch which turns red when working and you will hear it going on.
Have some one check to make sure you are getting power at the macerator
when toggle switch is turned on if this is all working at panel.
Check all connections are getting power before thinking the macerator
is the problem.
Like Mike said the macerator is easy to get to from rear panel
starboard side, make sure you push up on the panel than pull outwards,
from that point the whole holding tank system and macerator is excessable.
