Ok folks, I'm a complete and total idiot :eek:! Admittedly I am new to sailing, but I can't find the crank, lever, slot, hole, Ouiji Board or whatever it takes to raise and lower the swing keel on my 1977 O'Day 23:cussing:. HELP please.

I think the winch for the centerboard is on the table stanchion down below but I'm not sure. The later O'Days had the pendant line in the cockpit on the step just in front of the companionway.

Still Can't Do It

Thanks Joe, but I was just crawling all over the inside of the boat and I'm just not seeing it. I have a MacGregor 25 and that is real evident and easy to find.
Theres a hole external to the cabin stairs, that seems to have a shaft running down into the boat. If this is it, there must be some special tool necessary to operate it. I don't know, and I have to get that centerboard all the way up to remove the boat from the trailer on Tuesday morning.

Sorry to say it appears the centerboard pendant is nowhere to be found. That line usually exits that small nylon fitting and is secured to the cleat. You'll need to fish a replacement line through the fitting down into the keel. Best done with the boat in slings if possible. You can drop the centerboard and gain some access to the inside of the keel. I'm sure someone has dealt with this issue and can share the details on how to go about installing the new pendant.

Wow, thank you very much for that insight and information. The good news is that now I know how your supposed to retract the centerboard on that boat. The bad news is, I don't have a rope attached to it!!!:cussing: I am sending this boat to a landfill (supposedly on Tuesday) and have the trailer sold. I now need to figure out a way for them to get it off the trailer. They aren't going to be able to pull it off the trailer with the keel down and I don't want to trash the trailer in the process. :eek:

Now I have a totally different issue and am seriously open to suggestions. See the first two pictures in the posting. :confused:

I don't know this boat but:

What say you put a bottle or tranny jack under that - jack it up in flush and then run a couple of lag bolts thru the trunk into the board? Would that work?

Or a come along hooked to a tow strap all the way aroung the boat drawing up????

Doesn't seem insurmountable especially considering the imminent trip to the land fill...

A jack would work to push the centerboard up. Then take a piece of wood and bang it into the keel slot to wedge the centerboard in place. That should do it.

Landfill doesn't sound like a nice place for a boat. That said, seems the rope (pendant) used to pull the swing keel up ( through the little hole forward of the cleat in the cockpit deck) is m missing. Would not a strap all the way around the boat tightened up pull the keel in?

There have to be about a zillion ways to handle this because your sending the boat off to the landfill and it doesn't matter whether you damage it in the process. Tie a strap around the boat or drill into the keel and attach straps that way, take a reciprocating say to the board, lowering it a little every time you take off a slice....

Too bad the boat is heading off to be crushed, but I trust she's got a load of problems no other person would want to deal with.

A strap run under the keel would raise the CENTERBOARD and hold it up. THERE IS NO SWING KEEL!!! The O'DAY 23 is and always will be a Keel/Centerboard boat.

Still can't see why you would send this boat to the landfill, I wish I live closer so I could take a look....and maybe offer to take her off your hands as a restoration project. But, I'm not really in the market for a 23 right now....just hate to see an O'DAY needlessly trashed. If you decided to part the boat out you could make far more $$ than the boat is worth whole. Worth a consideration!

Stephen, I really don't want to appear to tell you what to do here, as I don't have a clue what condition the boat is in. With that being said, I really hope that you take a really good look at what you have there, it could very well be money in your pocket.
The 23' were/are very popular boats.

The lead in the keel (1200#) is worth a lot. I even doubt if a landfill would take it.

One less O'Day in the world makes mine more valuable. Right?

I always thought ebay was a good place to sell boat parts - once there are no more takers then trash the hull. I bet the land fill will take it - and they will salvage the lead/iron and aluminum for big bucks.

and technically...you can't get it down.
