Thank you Guys for your help. The shaft coupling and the transmission came appart after some PB blaster and a chisel. I end up cutting the shaft because the PO had tighten too much the packing nut and it was damaged. So now I have some question: Does anyone knows the shaft length for a Catalina 84 with an M25? Catalinadirect sales 55" and 54" shafts, a manual I found said 57" (for the version with the m18) and the length of the one I cut is 58". I sent an email to Catalina but no response yet. Solid or split shaft coupling? wouldn't be easier to service it in the future with a split one? The cutlass bearing looks good (no play) but since I am now changing the shaft and coupling should I change it too? Thanks

One; Don't Know. Two: No, and Three:No. The length you will have to get from someone who knows it, but the coupling requires very little service, and its supposed to be tight. Sometimes those bolts are lock-wired to prevent them from coming lose, To cut it In two, drill two or more two step bolt holes with or without spot faces, and adding two more bolts that would have to be lock-wired would cost more than it is worth, and it would be less reliable. Remember also that it normally slides over a key in the shaft with one or more set screws that are always lock-wired. Sometimes it is so tight on the shaft end that a puller is required. The cutlas bearing is water lubricated and lasts a very long time with good shaft alignment. If its good, why replace it. If at some time you have to replace it, you do it from the prop end an use a prop puller to take that off, so it's not normally that big of a deal unless you have to cut the old one out. In that case it sometimes is easier to pull the shaft. In that case your pains begin all over again, but that could happen next time even if you put a new one in now.
