Planning a Trent-Rideau canal cruise, and would like to make use of my PC. I have a Garmin E-trec and cable, but haven't tried it. Any with that GPS experience? Any advice on www's for use in Ontario Canada? Most seem USA only?? Free is better :) Thanks in advance... Roger

Roger, my understanding from reading many Canadian Chart books

is that even chart books do not comply with the Canadian laws to have paper charts on board for the area you are navigating in. Nothing I know of says that you cannot use electronic charting but you are supposed to have paper charts too. Perhaps a Canadian respondent could clarify this. Joe S

Canadian Coast Guard Inspections ask if you have charts.

They request that you have paper charts (eg - Richardson's) along with your electronic charts. That's question #17 on the compulsory list that the inspector asks, verifies, and checks off if you comply. If you don't, you are given a time schedule to comply with the requirement. Paper charts are the most important.

Thanks Jim, the above looks like what I want. I understand you have it?? Do you have an E-trex Legend? That's what i have, with no 'letters' in its model...Older one I guess? I'm a bit, (a lot:) confused. Is this item loaded into a lap-top, or into the Garmin GPS? If into the E-Trex, what happens to what is in it now? Would it go into the 'Map' page? If into my L-T, and when the computer is on, and the program displayed on my screen, is my location displayed? Do i see my movement on the water as i travel? I really need a patient mentor. The Garmin help # doesn't seem to do it for me. Maybe if I could just use the GPS properly, I'd be OK?? Thanks for your help. Roger
