what problems should we expect when buying a boat in the US Ohio if we plan to sail it home to Canada? Do we have to pay taxes both in the US and Canada for a used boat that we purchase through a broker? What are the steps we need to go through to register it in Canada? Any advice is appreciated.
Thanks

We live in Canada and purchased two US boats. It was not difficult. Be sure the seller really owns the boat. It should be US documented, that will make it easier to get the Canadian documentation.

The contact for the Canadian documentation was,

Call Don to get advice on exactly what documentation you will need to get your Canadian Documentation. They are very helpful in this office and can save you lots of problems if contacted beforehand.

If the vessel is purchased for export there should not be any local taxes to pay.

The selling broker should help with de-registering it with the US Coastguard. If there are any liens against the boat they need to be removed before the Coast Guard can do anything.

good luck, Bob

We bought from a broker and it was easy. Transported to Wilson, USA and then sailed it over. You will need to call the customs people when you make first port of entry. They will ask a few questions about the boat purchase and the price, then they will tell you the amount of tax due.

When you go to get the boat license they will ask for proof of taxes paid.

Good Luck
