Hunter 23.5 Red deer, Alberta
Need to get my 23.5 hunter insured with a trailer, what is the ball park one should pay?
The boat will be mostly on the trailer and used on weekends.

Can anyone recommend a good Canadian Broker that deals with sail boat insurance?

Thanks.

Check your homeowner policy. Trailerable water craft may already be covered but will need to be itemized. Otherwise I used BCAA over here on the other side of the hills. Alberta Motor Association over there? The trailer will need licensing and insurance separate from the boat.

The boat and trailer is insured by your car insurance, when attache to the car trailer hitch.

I would check your policy before making that assumption.... I know a guy who does know differently.

I like Harbour insurance. We used them for our trailerable boats and now our keel boat. They have offices in Toronto and Vancouver. We had a claim on our boat and they were on it quickly, authorized the repair in days, no problems. I've found them good to deal with.

We originally had Skippers Plan out of Toronto on our first trailerable boat. When we asked about taking it to the Florida Keys one winter they had a fit. I just cancelled and found another company.

The important thing is liability insurance, if you have a fuel spill, or someone gets hurt etc. a million does not go far.

Many household policies will cover a boat under 26'. Some will exclude them if you can cook on board. Make sure the agent knows the rules.

Good luck, Bob

I would be careful of coverage under your household or auto insurance. For example if your boat should capsize and sink in a shipping channel I would think you would have some problems getting it salvaged and moved under those policies

Well I spoke with my Agent and she found a company and it is $385 annually, not sure if this is good or bad, but for now I told her write it up, we will see again later.
The reason I want separate insurance is, we want to take the boat for a week to Montana and the Marina where we are renting a slip from wants at least a million liability insurance.
