Can you identify this?

I found this item on the deck of my boat after taking the boat out the other day. It's about two inches long. Can anybody identify what it is? Thanks.

Half of some kind of chain link, like a bicycle chain. No clue where from on a rig. Only thing I could think is steering chain. Wheel steering?

Look at your blocks. It looks like it could be the side protector/joiner to a small pulley. Maybe, kinda, sorta. That's my best guess.

THAT sounds right, Kloudie. Yeah, check your sails.

Yes it came off the clew of your sail for the leach line.

So is this essential? Do I need to replace it? Is the sail liable to tear without it?

leach line reinforcement

just find the sail that's missing the reinforcement and break out your rivet gun and repair it you could use 2 stainless screws and nuts as long as you file the screw end smooth so wont cut sail

I assume it is matched by an identical piece on the opposite side of the sail, no?

The other side is different looking .. check out this video which shows what you are dealing with, John..If you are lucky, the other half is hanging by the leech line and you still have it.. Good Luck.

Flying fish?

When I first read your headline, and before I read the whole post, the first thing I thought of was a flying fish, which sometimes end up on the deck in the morning (except for the 2" reference).
