Can you guess the cause of the leak?

Today I discovered the cause of a leak that had been driving me my crazy. My 1981 Hunter 27 took on water whenever it rained. Water never came in from the river while at the dock. However, when sailing in a strong wind and heeled way over (to the toe rail), the boat would take on river water. Turns out, both leaks had the same cause. Can you guess what it was? Hint, it wasn't the deck/hull joint.

Hunter 82? 37 Cutter Wherever the wind takes me
I'll give it a shot

I have three ideas. Was it... 1: Leaking aft deck drain/scupper? 2: Vent for water tank/waste tank? 3: Bilge hose? Manny

Stanchion

wouldn't be a thru-hull guys, it comes in from the rain too. Unless the thru hull is on the deck, which then it would be a thru deck :p I'd look at the stanchions.

Not being familar with the layout I would look

first at the stanchions and then at the toerail bedding and then the chain plates.

Deck drain hose.

The hose connection from the deck drain to the thru hull at the transom. It was on the starboard side right next to the engine exhaust. You found it on a Tuesday and fixed it on a Saturday. It was early, before lunch and you bumped your head on the lazarette after finding it. Let us know how I did - on all accounts.

GuyT pretty much gets it!

The hose on the port cockpit drain came off. Water coming into the cockpit went right into the boat. The port cockpit drain connects to a through hull on the starboard side. When heeled way over, water would come in the the boat from that hull through. Reattached the hose and all is well. And I swear I checked that hose out and didn't see a problem. "None so blind as those who will not see". thanks to all! ps. This came after fixing a leak in a stanchion, a leak in the starboard deck scupper, a leak in the fresh water feed tube, and repacking the stuffing box with gortex packing. She's pretty much water tight at this point.

Leaks and hard to reach places.

Stephen, I have a Hunter 34 so my guess was based on my layout and previous problems on my boat. I had a leak from my exhaust hose loop under the starboard lazarette. It was a 12 ft. hose that had about a 3ft. diameter loop just before the thru hull. The hose after 20 years got cracked from the bend radius pressure. It leaked slowly but still it took a while to figure it out. Every Hunter 34 owner that had to crawl into the starboard "coffin" will tell you that it is very very challenging. I replaced the "python" hose and yet was smiling the whole time - I had found the leak.
