Would these fittings work, building a bow pulpit? And "don't laugh" how much pressure is applied to the sides of a pulpit?

Yes, they will work but only as a decoration. They won't be as strong as a proper pulpit but you could try by drilling out all the dimple holes and thru-bolting everything which might probably chafe and destroy your headsail.

FWIW, the pulpit on my old boat fit into this type of deck fittings (maybe not the same brand/material). It was scary unstable until I drilled and thru-bolted the pulpit tubes to the deck fittings. Then it was amazingly stable.

To answer Dons point, the bolts for these fittings are three inches off the deck and oriented fore and aft. Please explain how they would chafe and destroy a headsail.

For a newport 17 I'd say that these would be fine, but like any other attachment don't bet your life on any single component.

Good luck!!

Our 19' boat has a SS pulpit with fittings similar to those. Our boat's previous owner put stainless pop-rivets to secure the railing to the rear fittings for strength, and I had the occasion to inspect and tighten the mounting screws when I ran wiring for nav lights.

In my opinion, it's plenty strong for the pulpit of a 19' boat... I've used it to climb onto the bow when on the trailer, and it's not my plan to ram docks or breakwalls with it.

None of our headsails seem to be touching the pulpit hardware; the pulpit doesn't seem to be causing significant sail wear.

If you can, inspect the fittings on boats in your local marinas, take a picture or two, maybe measure the bases, then use that info to compare with the catalogs.

You might want to search some marine salvage yards as well. Other brand boats can likely be adapted with a little bending and re-welding.
If you look at a pulpit they are actually pretty simply made. For the Luger I plan on making my own by having them bent at a garage of mufler shop. I did a lot of tube bending durning college when working for a machine shop and it is no big deal. I can buy polished stainless tubing for $2.65/lb. The bases are nothing more than flat stock.

To answer your question Bill, Yes! Check this article: http://www.duckworksmagazine.com/09/howto/pulpit/index.htm
Nice article Joe, I want a little more severe bend at the point. I learned on a hydrolic bender. I'm sure I can find one at the North Valley Occ Center, that is if the district hasn't closed it down. Right now the boat has aluminum tubing that is oxidized and looks flimsy.

If you can get down to Minney's go outside on the upper level, back around to the right alongside the building.... there's a ton of tubular fixtures... pulpits, pushpits, etc. I think there's even an arch or two.. But now that I think of it, I'd call first, 'cause most of the Minney's stuff is for big boats.

I see the one thing that has not been mentioned is that once you put it all together on the boat then simply remove it ie the base plate from the boat completely assembled and take it to a welding shop. Have them weld the tubes to the fittings where they slide in.

So these are not chrome plated? I research a little and sounds like is true 316 stainless steel. Will this discolor the metal if welded?

Bill, they will discolor from welding, but buffing with a little tripoli compound will clean the weld up.

I used those same fittings to make my out board of the rudder motor mount. I designed the whole thing using them and 1" oak dowels cut to the lengths for the straight pieces and took pieces to a machine shop to have the curved radius bent into the parts that needed it. Once I had all my straight lengths tweaked by cutting them down as needed or inserting a longer one here or there I took the whole thing to a welder and had him weld all the fittings permanently together. He just had to cut the straight pieces to match my wood dowels. It took him less than an hour to weld the whole thing together.

With all joints welded and all the base fittings through bolted with large backing washers on each bolt. It is amazingly strong.
